In the last week, I've gone no 'poo.
And no, I don't mean that kind of "no 'poo."
And no, I don't mean that kind of "no 'poo."
I stopped using shampoo and conditioner, completely.
What do I use? Baking Soda and lemon juice.
What do I use? Baking Soda and lemon juice.
Why, you ask, have I done away with shampoo and conditioner? There are some very nasty chemicals in them. Take a look here, to see where your skin/hair care products rate at.
Also, we are decently broke most of the time, and hair products for my thick, curly, frizzy hair, are just too expensive, and really add up quickly. Going no 'poo is pretty cheap!
My routine is pretty easy too. It takes about the same amount of time, if not a little bit less to wash my hair. Which is always a plus when your a Mom, and have a baby yelling for you!
Rub/massage baking soda paste into scalp.
I was doing this in the shower, with my hair already wet. But, with how thick and long my hair is, I'm going to start doing this before I get into the shower, with dry hair. (so I'll be saving water as well!!)
Once you've rubbed the paste into your scalp, let it sit for a minute, then rinse out of hair completely.
Pour lemon juice/water mixture over your hair, especially onto the ends.
I'll run my fingers though my hair to make sure I get it all. I can feel a big difference once I pour the lemon juice on. So I know if I've missed any spots.
Rinse well.
I've already noticed a big difference in my hair, even after the first "No 'Poo" wash. The natural oils that need to be in my hair, are still there and aren't being stripped away by harsh chemicals. I can go longer without washing my hair, it's not nearly as frizzy, and just seems healthier!
I'm sure I'll keep updating about my no 'poo routine as my hair evolves and gets used to being healthy again :)

This is my current method:
- Take baking soda (about 3 tbsp) and mix with just enough water to form a thick paste. (Amount may be adjusted for your hair type)
- Mix lemon juice and water in a bottle. (I don't measure amounts for this, just as much or as little as you need for your hair)

Hmmm... I wonder if I am brave enough to try this.
My fear is that lemon juice can also lighten hair, and I like the clor of mine, but is that only when it's left in/exposed to sun? Hm. I had also read somewhere about using vinegar. I wonder if it'd work in place of the lemon juice... Now I have to go do me some research.
Yes, you can use vinegar, or apple cider vinegar. The lemon juice was the only substitute that I had on hand though :)
Awesome. Vinegar I have copious amounts of. This I gotta try.
Good luck! I can't wait to hear how it goes :)
