A few months ago, I was sent reusable standard shopping bags from 1 Bag at a Time. We have been using them ever since they arrived, and I'm not even sure what I'd do without them! Not only have we been using them for groceries, but if I need a bag to throw some stuff in, I grab one of these. My Brother-in-law, even used one to collect his Halloween candy in. They are so multi-functional!
Just a few weeks ago, 1 Bag at a Time offered to send me one of their Jute Bags to try out. I loved this bag before I even got to try it out! It is organic and 100% biodegradable. So, when you are done with it, you can plant it in your garden, and it will return to the Earth.
The Jute Bag does not have a bottom
stiffener like the standard shopping bag, so it makes it a little hard to stand up to put things in it. But once you have a couple items in, that is no longer an issue! The Jute Bag was able to hold about two or three plastic grocery bags worth of items, and with the thick handle, it was still easy to carry. Not only is this a great bag for grocery shopping, but I think it would make a great bag to take shopping with you normally.

• Soft cotton handles are easy on hands and slip over most shoulders.
• Light and strong--holds books and other heavy items easily.
• Natural color and styling are attractive and eco-chic.
• Our tag encourages consumers to plant it in their garden after long
and useful service.
• Available with our logo or customized with your design.

For only $19.99 you'll get a 5 pack of the Jute Bag. I think this is a great replacement for gift bags, while still be affordable. I know my family would appreciate getting a bag like this that they could use over and over, rather than a paper gift bag that will just rip. If you are a business owner, 1 Bag at a Time offers their bags in bulk. It's customizable, too!
There are so many other great reusable bag options at 1 Bag at a Time. Take a look here to see all of the bags they offer! I absolutely love the Handcrafted Designer Bag. While it is more expensive than the other bags, it is gorgeous, and would even make a great purse! The Eco-Wrap Bundle is a great deal. This set includes 10 decorative pull bows, and 10 eco-friendly reusable bags! All for just $10.99!If you haven't caught on by now, I absolutely LOVE 1 Bag at a Time. With all of their options, you'll find bags that are just right for your family.
1 Bag at a Time is offering an amazing deal right now. With every order of ten or more standard shopping bags, you'll receive one free Jute Bag! This offer will expire on December 24, 2009 or while supplies last.
1 Bag at a Time has also generously offered to give one reader a Jute Bag of their own!
Here are the rules: You must be a follower of my blog. You can leave as many comments as you like, but please don't leave one or two word comments. You can leave facts from 1 Bag at a Time, or if you already use reusable shopping bags, or want to, let me know about it! Be sure to tweet the contest for extra comments, too!
UPDATE-Comments can say whatever you'd like, they no longer have to be about reusable bags!
Once the number of comments reaches 500, I will turn comments off and choose a winner using random.org.
Contest is open to continental residents of the US only. Contest will end in one week at 11:59 pm EST if we fail to reach the specified number of comments. A winner will be chosen by random.org and will be notified by email. I will also announce the winner in a separate post. You must contact me within 48 hours. If you fail to claim your prize, a new winner will be chosen by random.org and emailed. Please see my Disclosure.
**I was given the Jute bag for free, in exchange for my review, the opinions expressed are my own**

«Oldest ‹Older 1 – 200 of 499 Newer› Newest»Oh oh, I'm first!! I learned that paper is NOT better than plastic!
I learned that 80% of paper bags end up in landfills! They could be recycled, how sad is that?!?
I use bags I've collected from different stores. I have all different colors: blue, green, pink and red. I love them!
Ooo I would love one of these! I can't go to the store without my reusable bags. Almost all of mind though are from Whole Foods Market so I'd love to get one that doesn't have food pics all over it!
I've been using reusable grocery bags from grocery stores. They're not very attractive (in fact, very UNattractive), but they do the job.
I love using reusable shopping bags. They fit so much more stuff than the plastic ones.
I also love using reusable shopping bags to wrap gifts in instead of gift bags!
I always keep my coupons, baby carrier, and/or shopping cart cover in my reusable bags in my car so I'm less likely to forget to take them in!
I use reusable bags as much as possible. So much better for the environment!
I love Jaime's idea of packing gifts into reusable bags, 2 gifts in 1!
I keep my bags on the backdoor knob, so I won't forget them as I go out.
I also keep a Chico bag stuffed down in my diaper bag. I love them as they ball up so small- very convenient.

Approx. 380 billion plastic bags are used in the United States every year.
That’s more than 1,200 bags per US resident, per year.
Approx. 100 billion of the 380 billion are plastic shopping bags.
An estimated 12 million barrels of oil is required to make that many plastic bags.
Only 1 to 2% of plastic bags in the USA end up getting recycled.
Thousands of marine animals and more than 1 million birds die each year as a result of plastic pollution.
The United Nations Environment Programme estimates that there are 46,000 pieces of plastic litter floating in every square mile of ocean.
(ewww!)
Plastic bags are often mistakenly ingested by animals, clogging their intestines which results in death by starvation. Other animals or birds become entangled in plastic bags and drown or can’t fly as a result.
::cries::
Even when they photo-degrade in landfill, the plastic from single-use bags never goes away, and toxic particles can enter the food chain when they are ingested by unsuspecting animals.
Greenpeace says that at least 267 marine species are known to have suffered from getting entangled in or ingesting marine debris. Nearly 90% of that debris is plastic.
Americans consume more than 10 billion paper bags per year.
Approximately 14 million trees are cut down every year for paper bag production.
Most of the pulp used for paper shopping bags is virgin pulp, as it is considered stronger.
Paper production requires hundreds of thousands of gallons of water as well as toxic chemicals like sulphurous acid, which can lead to acid rain and water pollution.
Single-use plastic bags are also well known for the part they play in flood events, where they clog pipes and drains.
I use reusable bags at Aldi and CVS. I need to get better about it, though!!
I want to start using reusable bags at Target, as they offer 5 cents per bag, or so I've heard...
Tweet! http://twitter.com/newwife777/status/6285369402
Disposable bags cost the city of SF up to 17 cents per bag!!!
LOLed at this: if every New Yorker used ONE less bag per year, the city would be up by a quarter of a million dollars!!! Wish I had such an easy way to make money!!
Boutique plastic has the most litter by cubic feet per year!
They say that canvas bags only have a life span of 52 trips, but I disagree! My mom has been using some of hers FOREVER.
Oooooh paper bags use the most material in production.
Only 0.6% of plastic bags are recycled!
There are no programs to recycle the LDPE bags.... yet!!
I actually already knew this: paper bags don't biodegrade in landfills as they don't get the light, air, and water needed to biodegrade.
I learned that nothing really biodegrades in a modern landfill!!
Yay! I follow you and I use reusable bags!
I love reusable bags. My MIL laughed at me when I said I would wait in line at Target on Black Friday for the FREE bag
If only I could remember to always take them in with me!
I like that stores are offering bag credits! This is a great incentive for people to use them.
I would be interested to know if you can wash reusable bags. i know that you can wash canvas bags but someimes I wonder how clean the bags are after a few trips to the store.
I learned that in order to choose what type of a bag is best for the environment, the bag's whole life cycle must be considered.
The best bag for the environment is one that combines a low environmental impact with widespread appeal.
Ha ha, DUH. I never considered the importance of a bag's appearance in encouraging the masses to use it!
1 Bag at a Time sells PP fiber bags because every government study has shown that it is the best choice for consumers.

I am a follower of your blog...
I try to use reusable bags. I have them in the car, but often forget to bring them in the store.
Wow these are cute! I love them!!!
so sad that 100,000 marine animals are killed from plastic bags..
I always use reusable bags so I would use this a lot at the grocery store.
paper bags are not biodigradable...
So far, 1 Bag at a Time has sold over
6,144,640 reusable bags
Over the next 2 years, these bags together will save:
2,556.2 million plastic bags.

I hate all the plastic bags hanging around and I really hate throwing them away.
some stores will take plastic bags for recycling.. I need to take some of mine in soon
I love reuseable bags. I have about a dozen bags varying in size and material. We often give reuseable bags to family members as gifts. It would be nice to win this jute bag for my mom.

sometimes I feel weird carrying a bag from one store into another store.. I would prefer to have bags that don't identify a store.
I have bags from walgreens and use them for frys. But I feel weird when I take the Bashas bag into Frys
Well I have to go to bed... up way to late. wonder if there will be a winner in the AM???
I have 3 reusable bags, but haven't used them yet cause I feel funny only using 3 lol
there are lots of scary facts on this website
The petroleum in 14 plastic bags could drive a car a mile.
Americans use over 380 billion bags every year, throwing away millions of barrels of oil.
there is so much controversy on global warming but the site says: Paper bags have the highest global warming impact per bag compared to other types of bags. According to the US EPA, 70% more global warming gasses are emitted making a paper bag than a plastic bag, and 50 times more water pollution. They also contribute to global warming by destroying trees.
the 1 bag at a time polypropylene bags use the petroleum resources of 11 plastic grocery bags, but they are designed to replace hundreds of bags
Each bag can replace four plastic bags each time it is used.
When used once a week for two years, it will prevent 416 bags from being sent to landfills, enough to drive a car almost 30 miles.
Canvas and cotton bags might seem like the ideal solution, but they have never been widely popular. Several factors account for resistance to wide adoption. They are often expensive ($4-$25 per bag) and these materials absorb dirt and odor, and therefore require frequent washing. The combination of high maintenance and difficulty of use limit their usefulness as a solution for most Americans.
according to their life cycle analysis chart PP fiber bags last twice as long as canvas bags. I never knew the difference!
Disposable bags cost our cities up to 17 cents per bag for disposal
One study estimated that 100,000 marine animals are killed annually by plastic bags
plastic bags scare me because my baby puts everything in his mouth and he could very easily get a hold of a plastic bag for one second and a piece of the plastic bag could come of and go straight into his mouth possible occluding his airway!
it's so sad that Eighty percent of all paper bags end up in landfills. There, they do not biodegrade because of a lack of oxygen. They also cost more to landfill because they take up much more space by weight and volume than plastic bags do.
The two most common types of plastic bags are HDPE (High Density Poly Ethylene) and LDPE (Low Density Poly Ethylene). The first, HDPE, are the kind typically found at grocery stores. The second, LDPE, are the thicker bags found in boutiques and up-scale stores.
i do pretty well at remembering to bring my reusuable bags to the grocery store but very rarely remember them when I go to departement stores/clothing stores/or the mall
HDPE recycling programs exist but are limited. Only 0.6% of plastic bags are recycled. There is currently no recycling program for LDPE bags.
LDPE bags are less likely to end up as litter because they are denser (and thus less likely to blow away inadvertently).
the site says that it is hard to estimate the number of plastic bags being used because:
Perhaps it is because no one wants you to know, and also perhaps because we ourselves don't want to think about it. Manufacturers don't want to be associated with the problems these bags cause. Stores and even consumers are embarrassed about their own bag usage. Yet, stores and consumers continue to use them daily.
look at what other countries are doing to take action against disposable bags!
Ireland took the lead in 2002 by declaring that "the day of the plastic bag is over." The government instituted a levy of €0.15 per bag (roughly equivalent to $0.20 per bag) resulting in a 90% reduction of plastic bags in one year.
Australia initiated a voluntary program, urging retailers to carry reusable bags and exhorting citizens to buy them. In the first four years of this campaign, from 2002-2006, Australia reduced bag use by 45%, without a single tax penny collected.
South Africa, Rwanda, and other Asian and Indian nations have banned some types of plastic bags. In some places, discarded bags by roadsides were so ubiquitous that they were mockingly referred to as "the national flower" or "the national flag." - that's so sad
Hong Kong had one of the highest rates of bag use in the world: a whopping 4 bags a day per person! But recently, government and retailers joined forces to institute a "No Plastic Bag, Please" campaign, and bag use has dropped dramatically.
1 bag at a time bags are made in China
So far, 1 Bag at a Time has sold over
6,145,878 reusable bags
Over the next 2 years, these bags together will save:
2,556.7 million plastic bags.
Over the next 2 years, these bags together will save:
Enough petroleum to drive a car 184,376,400 miles.
Over the next 2 years, these bags together will save:
Up to $1,044,800 in disposal costs.
The Ace Hardware in my town uses 1 bag at a time bags!
For about double the price of a Styrofoam cooler, you can have a cooler bag to use for years without leaving behind any plastic particles in our environment.
their cooler bags will keep food hot or cold for up to 3 hours.
2 cooler bags costs 5.99
the cooler bags hold up to 30 pounds

The bag shown in this review is beautiful. Best looking grocery bag ever.
This bag is by far prettyer then any of the other reusables that I have
The deal they are running on shopping bags is pretty good since you'll get a Jute Bag.
I can get them for $1 at my grocery so this is just a few cents more and a free bag.
I need to be more "crunchy" recycling cans, cloth diapering and breastfeeding aren't enough, I need more reusable bags
oh wait, it says 500 comments. WOW that will take a while. I thought it was 200 for some reason.
I'm tired of plastic bags being all over my kitchen
These bags come in 5 colors! Black, navy blue, red, dark green, and brown.
I like how they'll stand up straight for loading and unloading (LOVE that!!!) but they'll still fold neatly for storage.

I have a mini reusable that I got a sample of a year or so ago, its too small to really use for shopping but Seamus loves to carry it around and pretend to "shop for his blocks"
My hubby thinks I'm weird for wanting reusable bags, I donno why he hates the plastic bag mess too
Oh wow! That is gorgeous!
Amy
The closest I've come to reusable bags has been paper bags that we re-use for various things after getting out groceries. With a crew my size, I wasn't sure how to make it work...but sure would love to try!
Amy
OK, so I'm reading over some of your comments here and thinking I could definitely do the whole reusable bag thing if they fit more stuff! That was one of my main concerns! (that, and I'd end up either forgetting to take them or losing them at the store) I just didn't want to be the gal walking in the store with 50 reusable bags...ugh.

Fancygrlnancy, I have followed your tweets to this giveaway.
I was in a live giveaway earlier, and like you, was only one comment away from winning.
I am doin some shopin this weekend and plan to take my reusable bags...
I am a follower, and I definately use reuseable bags.
YAY company...
I like that Target now pays you to use your own bags.
I have never thought to take reusable bags to department stores.. always just thought about grocery stores..
I hate it being only one away from winning, happens lots, it stinks lol
At Target do they just take it off at the register or how does it work. I heard about it, but again forget my bags in the car everytime.
My grocery store used to pay me to take them in, but they stopped. I guess they figured once they had us well trained, they didn't need to pay us anymore.
At each of the Targets I have been too, they have a coupon they scan when you tewll them how many bags you have. It takes off 5 cents a bag.
I need some pretty reusable bags to use as gift bags for Christmas this year!!
WOW that rocks. I need to remember to take my bags into the store!!
At CVS, they have you buy a tag for 99 cents, and each time you use a reuseable bag, they scan your tag. After four trips to the store, you receive 1$.
My favorite bags for Target are those Canvas ones they have with the big target on them. They cost a bit more, but they are so useful and sturdy.
I subscribe via google reader.

YOUR funny Donna... I am going back and forth too.
I didn't know about CVS.. don't go there much. I have a bunch of walgreens ones. Bought them like 3 for $1 a while back. Pretty sturdy.

Yeah 1 away is the worst.. I would rather be way off from winning then just 1 away. The bike I wanted to win that ended today I was also 1 away...:(
Yup, I do have a bunch of Wlagreens bags. I pick them up whenever I need to bump up my totals to use another coupon or register reward.
This is a good blog to follow and read Donna so is was a good mistake...
I know. Especially if it's the randomizer. You couldn't have picked my number? Why not?
It looks interesting so far. I have been reading past posts.
Sorry I got distracted with other stuff...
DO you cloth diaper??? SHe has a giveaway for a cute cloth diaper.
Is okay. I keep getting to other places as well.
Guess I need to get over to that giveaway, too.
I should not complain because I have won some great giveaways...but I really have my heart set on gettin some stuff for my little man and when I don't win I am sad..
THink my husband is going to kill me. he hates I stay up late.. I told myself bed by 11 tonight... almost 11, and not happening.
I feel the same way. I had my heart set on winning some ZhuZhu stuff for my little Bambi, and I entered just about every giveaway that there was for them little electronic hamster. Did I win? Nope. I think I was more disappointed than Bambi.
You must be over in Mountain time zone. It's almost one in the morning here.
I don't beleive I am going to make it to the end of this one. six comes awfully early in the morning.
