"The "Eureka!" moment came in the summer of 2005, when two friends, Debbie Stephens Stauffer and Kathleen Whitehurst, were in Debbie’s kitchen in Northern California working on ideas for a new business venture. During a break, Debbie asked Kathleen to feed her infant son with baby food from a jar. Kathleen noticed a warning on the jar label that the food should not be kept more than 3 days after opening. "So how do you know how long they've been open" she asked. Busy young mom Debbie replied: "Oh, I wish I knew – you can’t believe how much food we have to throw away because we can’t keep track." Debbie opened her fridge to reveal several half-full baby food jars that would soon be wasted.
Both instantly knew that if they could solve this problem, they'd have a product that would be valuable to people all over the world. So they pulled together a team of family, friends and experts (including Jonathan Bruck) and that led to the creation of the DaysAgo, a digital day counter that attaches to food containers and other things that need smart tracking.
A year and a half later and after lots of moonlighting for double u products, Kathleen's adult daughter, Jamie Whitehurst, also came to work full time for the business to make the DaysAgo a success."
I recently had the
wonderful opportunity to review the three styles of DayAgo, suction cup, magnetic, and the band. Just a quick look at the DayAgo site and the Uses page, and I knew these would come in handy in my home. When my daughter first started eating solids (purees), I quickly figured out that it was better for my daughter, and more cost effective, to make her food at home. 90% of what was made was then frozen for another day. The other 10% typically stayed out, so my daughter could have it right then. There were usually leftovers after her meal, and I hated to waste them. So I stuck it back in the fridge. By just the second day I would sometimes be second guessing what was the new food and what was the old. And occasionally, my husband couldn't read my mind and would feed her the not so fresh batch. Oops!
At first thought, DayAgo seems like one of those silly kitchen products. One that you might use a couple times, but then just forget about. In the two months that I've been using DayAgo though, I've stuck one to almost everything that is open in the fridge! I keep the magnetic DayAgo stuck on the fridge, and put the suction and band DayAgo on the top, so they are always in arms reach when putting something in the fridge.
There is a Pink edition as well, which was developed in honor of co-inventor Kathleen Whitehurst's experience with breast cancer. Proceeds from Pink sales are donated to the Breast Cancer Network of Strength. Kathleen is now an 11-year survivor!Milk, Lovebug's food, leftovers! They all have a DayAgo on them, and it's just so easy. You just hold the button down until the counter resets. And it starts counting the days away! Give it a quick press and it can show you how many hours have passed. Handy, huh?
The best part? We aren't wasting food! Now, we didn't waste much before. But now it's nearly down to zero waste! I've told everyone I can think of about DayAgo, and they think it's pretty neat too! What are you waiting for? Get counting, with DayAgo!
DaysAgo has very generously offered to give three Moma Lovebug readers two packs of the Magnet Style DaysAgo!

I would use my timer on left overs for sure! I'm never really sure and hate the idea of throwing food out!

Well, now that another infant will be entering the house soon, I'd use them on baby food!

This would be perfect for the stuff I can myself, like applesauce. I never remember when I open it, and of course I didn't put a date on it.

Gosh, so many uses. The Salsa jar often gets ignored and then the salsa goes bad. And baby food jars (those half eaten ones)--another good use!
