"Hi, I'm Annie Rose, and I make Moonpads, reusable menstrual pads.I believe that sustainability is not only better for the planet, but a better quality of life as well. My goal is to make beautiful, fun, affordable reusable menstrual products that bring that vision to life. who needs bleached white when there's hot pink, purple, or mossy green?! I have been making Moonpads since 2003, and they can be found in stores across the country."
Annie was sweet enough to send me a sample pack of her Moonpads to review. Before trying them, I had always used disposable pads and tampons. While I had always wanted to try it, I had just never made what I considered to be a big step.
As most of you know
, I've been bleeding for more than seven weeks now. I have gone through a ridiculous amount of pads. And I mean, a lot. One pack typically lasts awhile, but I've gone through two in the last 7 weeks. That really adds up. Just think of the expense. Over one year, if you buy one $5 dollar pack of pads a month, that's $60. That may not sound like too much to some people.Think over a lifetime, though. What about 30 years? That's $1,800. Not to mention all of the nasty chemicals we are exposing to such a sensitive area on our bodies. Plus, all of the landfills are full of it too! Gross, right? I know I'm tired of having chemicals that can be harmful to me and our planet in my underwear.
Since I've been bleeding for so long, I've had a pretty good trial of Moonpads. It can take a day or so to adjust what absorbency pad you need and for when. When I had the really heavy bleeding a few weeks ago (even worse than postpartum) I had to switch to a disposable. It was just too heavy for the pad to keep up. I don't blame Moonpads though, it was my period that was unnaturally heavy.Moonpads have taken pretty much everything else I've thrown at them though. From the lightest of days, to *almost* the heaviest. Really the only issue I have is that they can move around a little, and if your flow is heavy, that can cause a problem. But again- that's the only issue I've had, and other than that- I really love my Moonpads!
Did I mention that
Moonpads are organic? They have one of the highest organic cotton contents of any reusable menstrual pads - the only part that isn't organic are the flaps. It makes me feel even better knowing that the fabric touching my skin is organic and not farmed with more yucky chemicals! There are also a ton of gorgeous colors and fabrics for the flaps! White, white, white all the time is so blah, blah, blah! But purples, pinks, oranges, and blues? Periods suck, but at least you can be colorful. There are also little straps, right inside of the flaps of the Moonpads. This is great so that I can hang the Moonpad after I've used and rinsed it or if it's hanging to dry after a wash! Super handy!!
Moonpads has generously offered to give a Moonpad of any style or absorbency to TWO Moma Lovebug Readers!

I'd love the Day Pad in Peapods design. I've thought of using cloth (haven't researched it much) but the upfront cost with the uncertainty of how they might work is a barrier. This would be a great test!

I really want to try cloth pads. Would love to save the money and trips to the store. Plus I hear they can actually shorten your period! I am trying to use cloth everything. So far, we cloth diaper and use cloth napkins most of the time.

I have thought about using cloth instead of disposible for a number of reasons. Number one is to stop filling landfills with my waste. number two is because I would prefer to know what is in the material that I keep right next to my body for 1/4 of each month. Chemicals and such. And number 3 is I think it would help me be more comfortable with my own cycle.

I currently use mama cloth as a backup to the diva cup but I don't like the diva cup at night so I like to use mama cloth then exclusively. I think it's more comfortable then disposables. I don't have many so I have to wash them often so I could really use more!

I'm just now trying to switch to cloth. I cloth diaper my baby, I'm not sure why it's taken me so long to switch for myself! Guess I don't think about it every day like diapers!
I think I would choose Extra Absorbent Moonpads Organic Cloth Reusable Washable Menstrual Pad in Sugar Skulls, would be great for my second day! kschroeder616 at gmail dot com
I would choose the pink flames day pad.
I would take the heavy flow starter kit. I know this sounds strange, but I think I am becomming allergic to whatever they are using in pads now. I am going to have to find a alternative, and this sounds like it might be a good choice.
